SOKION CHOI | sokionchoi@snu.ac.kr

I am a doctoral candidate affiliated with the Program in History and Philosophy of Science (PHPS), Department of Science Studies at Seoul National University (SNU). After obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in philosophy at Yonsei University, I received a Master of Science degree at PHPS, SNU, with a thesis on the British cybernetician Gordon Pask. Now I am working on my doctoral project on the history of computer vision from the 1960s to the 1990s. My current dissertation project, tentatively titled Artificial Ways of Seeing: A Historical Epistemology of Computer Vision, examines how diverse conceptions of human subjectivity shaped machine vision algorithms, as well as how AI systems incarnated new models of non-human subjectivity.

My research develops along two closely related lines. First, I explore how science conceptualizes the patterns of sensory experience. In this regard, I have conducted research on cybernetic aesthetics and AI-based computer vision. Second, I investigate the consequences that current developments in technoscience have on traditional ideas of “the human.” Along this line of inquiry, my work addresses the philosophical, ethical, and social implications of AI, while critically engaging with the imaginaries of posthumanism, transhumanism, and cyberpunk futurism.

I have presented my research at multiple venues, including the History of Science Society (HSS), the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT), the Society for the Social Studies of Science (4S), and the AAAI/ACM Conference on AI, Ethics, and Society (AIES). I have published a number of academic journal articles and book reviews in Korean, and have taught at universities and civic education institutions. Besides my academic and educational experiences, I have also worked as a sound engineer, a music critic, an amateur astronomer, a graduate student journal editor, and an art exhibitions curator.
