SOKION CHOI | sokionchoi@snu.ac.kr

I am a doctoral candidate affiliated with the Program in History and Philosophy of Science (PHPS), Department of Science Studies at Seoul National University (SNU). After obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in philosophy at Yonsei University, I received a Master of Science degree at PHPS, SNU, with a thesis on the renowned British cybernetician Gordon Pask. Now I am working on my doctoral project on the history of computer vision from the 1960s to the 1990s. My dissertation, tentatively titled Artificial Ways of Seeing: A Historical Epistemology of Computer Vision, examines how multifarious notions of human subjectivity have been integrated into algorithms during the development of perceptive machines.
My academic endeavor consists of two major streams. First, I explore the dynamic interplay of technoscience and the senses. I am interested not only in the ways in which science apprehends the aisthēsis, but also in the role of technology as an infrastructure that conditions the senses. Second, I investigate the consequences that current developments in technoscience has on traditional ideas of “the human.” In this regard, I am concerned with the ethical and social implications of AI on the one hand, and the thorough interrogation of the transhumanist ideology on the other.
I have presented my research at multiple venues, including the History of Science Society (HSS), the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT), the Society for the Social Studies of Science (4S), and the AAAI/ACM Conference on AI, Ethics, and Society (AIES). I have published a number of academic journal articles and book reviews in Korean, and have taught at universities and civic education institutions. Besides my academic and educational experiences, I also had been a sound engineer, a music critic, an amateur astronomer, a graduate journal editor, and an art exhibitions curator.
